And good eats!! Well, 2012 is off to a good start and we are feeling very optimistic about the year ahead. So far, the addition of soup and grilled cheese sandwiches to the menu has been well received and we are quite inspired to see folks dining in-house now that we offer more seating. We certainly have other ideas up our sleeves for providing you the savory nourishment you need as well as the sweets you crave so stay tuned. Of course all the success we anticipate in the year ahead is not be possible without your continued support and patronage for which we are extremely grateful. We humbly encourage you to bring your family and friends in, especially those who have never heard of us and of course those skeptical of all things vegan. 2012 is most certainly the year to make a plant-based diet mainstream and to achieve that goal we will need your help!

We hope you all enjoyed ringing in the new year and are looking forward to all the wonders 2012 could bring. During our brief winter hiatus we cleaned out the cobwebs, gave the place a fresh new look and dreamt of all the ways we intend to delight you culinarily in the year ahead. We promised some new additions to our menu in the savory/lunch realm and in order to make that happen we needed to make sure the shop was in tip-top shape and ready to fit your healthy appetites. Now Serving Hot Soup!

After fielding many requests for something warm and savory and easy for those on-the-go we are happy to announce the addition of hot soup to our menu. Soup is now available every day in an 8oz cup ($3) or a 16oz bowl ($4.50) and it comes with a complimentary roll from Grand Central Bakery or a housemade gluten-free cornbread muffin. Rest assured all of our soups will always be vegan, organic and gluten-free and deliciously hearty. Some of the soups we have featured since launching a week ago include: Curried Butternut Squash & White Bean, Lebanese Lemon Lentil, Classic Minestrone, Southwest Black Bean, Corn Chowder, Green Lentil Dhal and today we offer a nostalgic Potato Leek. Stop in any day of the week and warm up with a cup or bowl or have it packaged up to go!

The winter holidays are here and with all the hustle and excitement comes busy schedules and stress. Take one more thing off your plate and have us bake for your special events! Whether you're bringing Gingerbread Cookies to the office or a Pumpkin Crumble Pie to a holiday party, we got you covered. Click here for our special orders pricing guidelines. Survey Says...

We have so much to be thankful for and our fantastic customer base is at the top of this year's list. A heartfelt thank you to all who took the time to fill out our survey last month. We read each and every word you thoughtfully shared with us and much of what was suggested affirmed some of the ideas we already had in mind for 2012. Perhaps the loudest call was for more savory lunch options and for us to expand our offerings beyond the usual sweets. First to look forward to will be a hearty bowl of soup to fuel up on the cold winter days ahead. Stay tuned for the official launch of these exciting changes. When new items become available we will post it on our Facebook page as well as on Twitter so make sure you follow us there so you don't miss the announcements. We've also constructed an ice cream menu to make ordering easier. We have a long list of shakes, sundaes and banana splits for you to choose from featuring our Temptation Brand Soy Soft Serve or Luna and Larry's Coconut Bliss ice cream by the scoop. Thank you for all the feedback and helping us fine tune our offerings to better serve you.
Holiday Hours and Activities

We will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. We will be open on Friday, November 25th, from 10am-8pm, a slightly shorter day than our normal hours. Kicking off the winter holiday season the Alberta Main Street Association brings to you Tannenbaum Madness, with many businesses on the street offering special deals, events and festivities. A number of neighboring shops and boutiques are participating in Little Boxes a campaign to get Black Friday shoppers supporting local businesses in lieu of the big box stores.Supportland will also be giving away triple points network wide on Black Friday and Saturday so make sure you have your card handy or pick one up at our shop. If that's not enough incentive to shop local, we'll be having a retail sale to make room for some of those changes we mentioned!

Everybody wants to be the person who brings the best treat to the office, a dinner party or a friend's birthday. Take the stress out of that decision and bring a fresh baked treat from Back to Eden! With the holidays right around the corner, now is the perfect time to consider what you will be bringing to your holiday events. All of our baked goods are dairy-free, egg-free and completely vegan plus most can be made gluten-free, which makes it an easy choice to please a myriad of preferences across the board. We source high-quality organic ingredients and support local whenver possible. Above we have some pricing guidelines for our popular Muffins, Cupcakes, Cookies, Cheesecakes, Cakes, Pies, Scones and Whoopie Pies. Most baked goods we sell in the shop are available for special orders, give us a call for pricing on specific items.

Special Orders Policy

All special orders for Thanksgiving need to be placed by close of business on Friday, November 18th. For all other orders, we require minimum 48 hours notice in person or over the phone. If you'd like to use our handy online order form, we require 72 hours notice. Please do not leave voicemails or send emails to place an order, they can only be accepted in person, over the phone or online. All orders are subject to availability as our calendar tends to get filled up or certain ingredients aren't available. All orders require payment at the time the order is placed. Please call the shop for any questions regarding allergies, our staff is fully trained to assist you.

Greetings Friends, Fans and Family!!

We hope that you are enjoying the onset of Autumn/Winter in the Pacific Northwest! It’s hard to believe that summer has already come and gone and that we are once again raking up the leaves, stoking the hearth and contemplating holidays and hibernation. Looking at the year in retrospect we have so many reasons to feel blessed and inspired by the work that we do and optimistic about the road ahead. Back to Eden celebrated many milestones in 2011 and to highlight just a few: after 4 years baking in a converted 500-sq. ft. garage we moved the operation out of the home and into a beautiful, spacious commercial baking facility located directly behind the shop; the boutique received a modest upgrade with old-fashioned parlor stools and tables with expanded seating; we celebrated a 2-year Anniversary in spite of a tough economy; and we, the owners, John and Garrett, actually managed to get more than two days off in a row!! On top of all that August sales made for our best month to date thanks in no small part to the heat wave we had and our increasingly popular soft serve sundae options.

So before we go on any further, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported, patronized and cheered us on! We truly could not have gotten this far without you and we hope the future allows for us to remain in service to this incredible community for many years to come. Which brings us to a moment of great humility and transparency as we ask you for your continued support and patronage. In spite of all the successes we detailed above we continue to operate with a very slim financial buffer and as the changing season brings a decrease in sales the costs of providing you quality, organic baked goods only goes up. As we all know the world around us is changing at a velocity that can sometimes feel difficult to keep up with just as human beings let alone conscientious small-business owners. Even in our own menu-planning we have seen the demand for gluten-free increase ten-fold and as such have added many new items to accommodate this evolution. While food and energy costs have risen across the board we have done our best not to pass these expenses on to our customers in hopes that sales would remain steady and that the economic climate would improve. But as the times change so must we evolve so that we remain relevant and viable throughout the lean seasons ahead.

The bottom line is we love, love, love being of service to the Portland community and have faith that Back to Eden can be instrumental in bringing healthy and delicious, vegan-organic foods into the mainstream. As many of you already know, vegan cuisine isn’t just for “vegans” anymore and it is our steadfast conviction that good, conscious food can and will change the world. We want to keep at this for many years to come and here is how you can help us succeed: 1) Continue to patronize our shop whenever and as often as you can. 2) Help spread the word about us whether it is by word-of-mouth, Facebook, Twitter, etc. 3) Consider us for pies and treats this holiday season. and 4) Fill out the brief survey below so that we may get a sense for how we can better serve you and provide you with the fare you need as well as desire.

Our move was a success! We are now baking in a state-of-the-art production facility directly behind our shop on Alberta. It was months of work and days of intense labor but it is done and we couldn't be more excited. Thank you all for your patience and support during our transition period, we are grateful to everyone that has contacted us and stopped in to wish us well. Ice Cream Party! Baking Facility Relocating!

Our Baking Facility Is Moving Behind The Shop!

Hello!
Back to Eden began as a modest, small operation out of the converted garage in the owners' house. It is a lovely commercial baking facility and it has suited us well but we have outgrown our humble beginnings. We are incredibly grateful for all the support you have given us in the almost two years since we opened our doors on Alberta street and are ecstatic we are in a position to expand. Thank You! The relocation process requires gutting the existing bakery, reinstalling everything at the new bakery and get permits for the new space. In a nutshell, we can't bake for a few days! Our bakery should be up and running in time to open will a full case on Thursday. We won't have any baked goods in the shop for a few days, so what are we doing instead?

We Are Having An Ice Cream Party!!

Next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (8/21-8/23) we will have specials all day featuring our Soy Soft Serve and Coconut Bliss Ice Cream. All Specialty Milkshakes, Sundaes and Banana Splits will be $1 OFF All Day! Do you have a soft serve punch card? We are also doing double punches for all single and double servings of Soft Serve! We have some exciting news! Back to Eden has a ticket to give away for Vida Vegan Con!!! What is Vida Vegan Con? It is the first ever all-vegan blogger conference happening in our humble city, organized by three well-known Portland bloggers: Janessa of Epicurious Vegan, Jess of Get Sconed! and Michelle of Vegtastic Voyage. The sold out, jam-packed conference will take place August 26th-28th at University Place in downtown Portland. The conference will feature workshops, cooking demos, presentations, panels and a Galarama silent auction. The ticket includes access to all these events, some meals, a swag bag and more!

After almost two years of non-stop operation, John and Garrett, the owners of Back to Eden, will finally be getting some much needed rest in sunny Maui to celebrate their best friend's wedding! Though it was a difficult decision, we have decided to close for a few days to allow for proper rest and relaxation. Our hours will be as follows:

We will resume our normal hours, 9am-9pm, on Tuesday, July 19th. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Did you know we are offering Happy Hour twice a day during the week? Monday through Thursday 9am-12pm $4 for a 12oz coffee or tea and a pastry (muffin, scone, coffee cake, puff pastry or bagel with Sundried Tomato Cream Cheese). We also have Soft Serve Happy Hour from 4pm-7pm, $1 Off all Soft Serve treats! This promotion is valid for Soft Serve Cups, Cones, Milkshakes, Sundaes, Floats and Banana Splits! We feature two flavors daily or you can swirl the two!

We have joined the Supportland network! Not familiar with Supportland? It is a rewards program for shopping locally. The first time you run your card you get 20 points and then 5 points each time thereafter. We also have an electronic punch card associated with Supportland. Happy Tuesday, everyone! We've really been feeling the seasons change here over the last few months, and in turn have some new and exciting things in store.

First off, we've got new seating here in the store! In wanting to make our shop a more comfortable spot to hang out and enjoy your treats, we've put in soda shop bar stools and a number of small tables for you to relax at. The space definitely feels more spacious and open - come on down, enjoy some delicious Temptation Soy Soft Serve and see for yourselves!

Our storefront isn't the only thing that's gotten better. Our amazing bakers have been coming up with some great new flavors of our most popular treats. We now have Green Tea Vanilla Bean Whoopie Pies and Savory Croissants. This week's flavor is Tempeh Mushroom Mozzarella.

We support a large number of local businesses in our shop by selling their products but we always become giddy when the chocolatier herself drops off her wonderful truffles. Happy Beatles Sunday Everyone!

Every Sunday we play the Beatles non-stop all morning long through the early afternoon. Stop by and sing along with us! Did you know we open at 9am everyday and close at 9pm? We sincerely hope that you all had a wonderful holiday weekend filled with family, friends and good grub!! It's hard to believe that we are now in the home stretch of 2010 with only a few days left to go!
